Peakshaving
Many commercial and industrial consumers observe spikes in their electricity consumption at regular as well as irregular intervals. Common causes are during powering up of large machines, changing shifts, switching from one production process to another etc. The average power is calculated over a 15-minute period by the energy provider and the C&I consumer must pay an increased demand charge i.e. costs for the maximum 15-minute annual peak load of consumer.
HISbatt BESS eliminates the load on the electricity provider by supplying additional power required during the peak directly at the consumer. The consumer, in exchange, benefits from significant savings.
Saving Costs
As a consumer, you are required to cover the increased costs to the electricity provider, since providers must account for peak power consumption, even if it occurs for only a short period. This approach addresses the uncertainty providers face due to unpredictable and irregular peaks. For your electricity connection, you are provided a “maximum power level” typically in kW. If your average power consumption during a 15 minute period exceeds this maximum power value, the electricity provider charges a high demand charge.
The HISbatt turnkey battery energy storage system automatically provides the extra power required for your business. This means you will no longer exceed the maximum kW value set by the provider and avoid any extra charges. Integrated with an intelligent energy management system (HIS-EMS), HISbatt can also reduce your electricity bill by optimizing your electricity consumption to ≥ 2500 hours for medium sized and ≥ 7000 hours for big energy consumers, thereby saving a significant amount of money on your energy bill. Additionally, the battery storage offers reliable and local access to energy for any planned or unplanned processes.
Physical Peak Shaving with HIS EMS
HIS-BESS features an intelligent energy management system which regulates the demand for peak shaving. As soon as your energy demand exceeds the maximum kW value from your provider, the battery kicks in and caps the peak by providing the extra energy required.
The goal is ensure that the maximum kW value is never exceeded, even if momentarily. This means that you as the consumer can operate your business and heavy loads without any worries according to your needs, while also avoiding any extra charges from the energy provider.
The battery is recharged from connected PV or grid automatically when required.
RLM Peak Shaving with HIS EMS
Going beyond physical peak shaving, our intelligent EMS can also record your load profile and perform smart decisions. The battery storage system should only discharge if the average over the 15-minute interval constitutes a peak i.e. the case where your provider can bill you the extra costs.
Through continuous monitoring and smart peak shaving algorithm the BESS discharges only if the average over 15 minutes would constitute a peak. This means that you can still draw power higher than the maximum kW value from the provider, but still not register a peak.
The result is a precise and optimal peak shaving strategy, a reduced BESS size requirement—thereby lowering CAPEX, extending the lifetime of the BESS, and generating substantial savings for the consumer.
What about load shifting?
Load shifting moves energy consumption from peak hours to off-peak hours. For example, certain industrial processes are moved from afternoon to evening. Load shifting can only be performed for limited use cases and often at the cost of business efficiency.
Peak shifting with integrated batteries is more practical, particularly when:
- You have inflexible loads, whose operation cannot be shifted to different periods.
- You have unpredictable high-power loads such as DC fast chargers for electric vehicles.
- You have integrated renewable energy at site such as solar PV. Peak shifting with solar PV and BESS is extremely profitable since BESS can store excess energy as well as supply power in cloudy or low-production hours.
High power EV chargers exhibit an almost instantaneous increase in power demand. Integrating a Li-Ion BESS with EV chargers reduces the stress on the power grid, eliminates unavoidable peaks, and provides reliable and affordable power for EV charging. These loads cannot be shifted.
Get the most from your battery storage
Li-Ion BESS are multi-purpose and generate multiple streams of revenue. Get the most out of your battery storage system for peak shaving by using it to:
- Reduce overall consumption from the grid
- Benefit from fluctuating electricity prices
- Store excess renewable energy
- provide lucrative grid balancing services with battery storage systems.
- Increase independence from the electric grid
- Provide emergency backup power supply (such as UPS),
Business Case Example
Consider that your business has a peak power that occurs only intermittently. For example, when multiple employees are charging their electric cars while an essential heavy load is operating. For this example, let’s assume some numbers:
100 MWh / year
Annual energy consumption
100 kWp
Solar PV installed
200 kW
Peak Power
Typical low voltage connection limit is 150 kW. Therefore, to ensure 200 kW for your business during peak hours, you have two options:
1. Request a medium voltage connection
-
Additional costs including MV transformer, MV switchgear, footprint
costs etc. - Typical waiting period approximately 24 months
2. Disconnect non-critical loads if power consumption > 150 kW
- Suboptimal operation of business
- Extra costs for planning and distribution of loads (load shifting)
-
Inconvenience to users (non-critical processes must be halted, EV cars
cannot be charged during this period)
A better and sustainable solution is to install battery storage that can provide peak shaving of at least 50 kW and ensure optimal and continuous operation of your business. Furthermore, you are protected from high demand charges by reducing peak loads, saving thousands of euros on your electricity bill.
Another aspect is the underutilization of the solar PV. A 100 kWp rooftop solar PV will generate about 100 MWh of energy annually. However, due to different in the load curve of your business and the production curve of your installed PV, a typical business will use only about 35% of the generated power. The rest must be exported to the grid, or curtailed. As feed-in rates continue to decline, exporting energy to the grid becomes less financially viable.
The untapped and unused energy from PV can be used to charge the battery storage and be supplied at a later stage, reducing further the consumed kWh from the grid as well. HIS recommends installing a battery capacity with a ratio of 1.4 to 1.6 with respect to total MWh generated by solar PV.
For our example, as per HIS recommendations, installing a 140 kWh battery storage would double the self-consumption of PV from 35% to 70%! Considering the average demand charges and consumption charges over the past two years, we can expect:
- Peak shaving / Demand charges costs savings: ≥ 5000 EUR
- Consumption costs savings: ≥ 7000 EUR. PV feeds an additional 35 MWh annually to business directly.
Considering CAPEX and OPEX for an All-in-One 150 kWh lithium-ion battery storage, the expected ROI is 4 to 5 years. All with worry-free and reliable power right at your fingertips!
